About The village of Ardagh is a designated Heritage Village in County Longford.

It is situated about 10 kilometres west of Longford Town just off the N4 road.

It was here that St Patrick appointed St Mel, as one of the earliest Irish Bishops.

At the foot of Ardagh Hill, Ardagh has resonances of the romance of an old Irish mythological tale associated with the hill.

Ardagh Heritage Centre has a unique selection of varied attractions and is located in the old schoolhouse, built in 1898.

The story of Ardagh is one of history, literature and storytelling, and the exhibition through the ages including its association with Goldsmith, Sir Walter Scott and Maria Edgeworth.

Much of the town was built as an 'Estate Village' in the 19th century, based on a Swiss design, and has received much acclaim for its beauty, being awarded the Prix d'Honneur of the Entente Florale and winning the National Tidy Towns Competition on three occasions.
