At Granard, in east County Longford, you will find the remains of a tall motte and a large bailey, most of it surrounded by a deep ditch and bank.
On top of the motte stands a statue of St.
Patrick erected in 1932.
It is a distinguishing feature of Granard which stands some 543 feet above sea level and is situated at the head of the town.
Granard Motte is estimated to have been built in pre-Danish years, and was used by Richard de Tuite in 1199 in efforts to complete the Norman Conquest.
It is said to be the largest Motte in Ireland.
From the top of the motte, you will be able to see nine counties, five lakes, forests and numerous rivers.
