About

Dundalk is the county town of Louth and it is appoximately half way between Dublin and Belfast.

The name originates from the Gaelic name Dun Dealgan.

It is a great shopping town with a wide variety of shops.

It is the headquarters for Louth County Council and also has a large Institute of Technology.

Dundalk is the home of two Irish beers called Harp Larger and McCardles Ale.

In the town there is the county library and museum, a good reference point for researching Louth and local history.

There is also a beautiful cathedral called St Patricks Cathedral which is well worth a visit.

At the centre of the town there is the square opposite the county court which is also a beautiful historic building.

Not far from Dundalk is also a small whiskey brewing plant called Cooley Distillery which has new brands such as Kilbeggan, Locks and Millars Whiskey.

Also located in Dundalk is the Race track which hosts both horse racing and greyhound racing.

There are many things to see in the area and is a good base to use when visting historic sites such as the Cuchalainn Fort, Proleek Dolmen and medieval Carlingford. Not far from Dundalk is the seaside village of Blackrock with it's sandy beaches and beautiful view of Dundalk bay and the Cooley mountains.

Also close by is the small lakeside walk of Stephenstown pond in Knockbridge, which is a great place for families to have picnics and feed the ducks.
