County Clare is a beautiful county on the west coast of Ireland.
The name comes from the Gaelic word Clar meaning board. Legend has it that a board was placed across the river Shannon allowing people to cross. The place became known as Clar, or Clare as it now called.
Clare is home to the world-renowned and stunning scenic Cliffs of Moher and the remarkable landscape of the Burren. Make sure that if you visit the Burren that you see Poulnabrone Dolmen. Nearby are the unique Ailiwee caves which demand a visit when in the area.
The famous Bunratty Castle and Folk Park is located just 10 kilometres from Shannon International Airport and is a must for all visitors see when in Ireland. Do not forget to quench your thirst at the famous Durty Nellies pub next door to the castle.
Clare, in fact, is well populated with castles – others include Knappogue, (a sister Castle of Bunratty) and the 5-star Dromoland Castle. There is a huge variety of other interesting places to visit in County Clare from secluded coastal beauty spots to wonderful villages and towns such as Doolin and Lisdoonvarna.
