County Sligo is perhaps the most under-rated beautiful county in Ireland. Sandwiched on the west coast between Mayo and Leitrim/Donegal and bounded to the east by Roscommon, it unjustifiably suffers a little from the higher tourist profile of those counties. However upon discovering it, one finds a small precious jewel.
Sligo is filled with majestic mountains and glorious beaches and lakes. This varied landscape inspired the paintings of Jack Yeats, the brother of one of Ireland's most influential writers, W. B. Yeats. It is for this reason that Sligo is so fondly known as Yeats' Country. Yeats' family spent their summer months at Rosses Point and thousands of folk come to Sligo each year to pay their respects to the great writer who is buried in Drumcliff churchyard at the foot of Ben Bulben, the uniquely shaped mountain peak that is the landmark of Sligo.
Sligo Town is an attractive, compact town with a very attractive centre that invites the visitor to explore by foot. Other smaller towns are Tubbercurry, Ballymote, Enniscrone and Rosses Point. The latter two are home to two of the best links golf courses in Ireland and also some great beaches. North of Sligo is Mullaghmore which is a beautiful strand and holiday home area.
