About The Motte Stone is a large glacial stone situated about 20 kilometres west of Avoca in County Wicklow, standing on high ground, providing the visitor with a commanding view over Wicklow and the east coast of Ireland.

This was most likely part of a settlement built for defensive purposes.

A motte was an area of land surrounded by a ditch which is rounded at the southern side but squared at the north.

Further to the south there was a raised area, which may also have been used like a bailey for defensive purposes.

A stone circle,100 feet in diameter, with an interior and exterior facing of stones and bank in between were constructed.

Some very large boulders were used in this circle, and some lying down.

The Motte Stone located near the townland of Cronebane and is locally know as Finn McCools hurling stone.
